WAIMEA — Waimea students Kai Griley, Anna Sorensen and Jacob Schnitzler will be competing this week in the Hawaiian Swimming State Championships beginning tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Pool in Oahu. The meet runs through July 17.

WAIMEA — Waimea students Kai Griley, Anna Sorensen and Jacob Schnitzler will be competing this week in the Hawaiian Swimming State Championships beginning tomorrow at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Pool in Oahu. The meet runs through July 17.

Members of the Academy Swim Club, they qualified earlier this month by meeting or bettering the Hawaiian Swimming “AAA” time standard during the qualifying period for each individual event entered.

Griley will be a seventh grader at Parker School this fall and is swimming in the 11/12 Division. Sorensen, a ninth grader at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, will compete in the 13/14 Division. Schnitzler, also a ninth grader, is homeschooled and will swim in the same division for the first time.

Each student will compete in six individual races during the the bi-annual championship event against teams from all of the islands.

Academy Swim Club teammates train at Hawaii Prep for two hours every weekday during season.
